Kowanyama Community Expo

A range of Kowanyama organisations and services came together on Wednesday 13 September for a Community Expo.

Apunipima Health Promotion Officer Fiona Millard said the community led, community run event was designed to raise awareness about the services and support available in Kowanyama.

‘The Expo was all about creating awareness about services and programs, sharing education and information, promoting career opportunities within services and discussing career pathways.’

‘There was a range of fun activities including a jumping castle, damper making, traditional dancers and a barbeque lunch.’

‘Kids will also take part in a ‘treasure hunt’.  They have to find out key health and service information in order to gain enough stamps to win a prize. It encourages kids to ask questions and learn through play.’

‘We will also have our dietitian, Baby One Program and Tackling Indigenous Smoking health workers and Diabetes Educator on hand to talk to community about our services and provide health education.’

‘Overall there was about 20 stalls – it was a major and exciting community initiative.’

Organisations taking part included Apunipima Cape York Health Council, Kowanyama Shire Council, Queensland Health, Queensland Police Service, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Kowanyama State School, Kowanyama Child Care Centre, Skytrans, Out There Kowanyama, Kowanyama Justice Group, Mookai Rosie, Local Rangers, Remote Area Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Care (RAATSICC), Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC) and Rise.
