Executive Manager of Clinical Services

Originally from Ireland, Doctor James joined Apunipima in October 2023 in the role of Executive Manager of Clinical Services. He has trained and worked extensively across the Top End of Australia as a General Practitioner and has gained invaluable experience working in remote Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community health care. After working in the Northern Territory for several years, Dr James moved to Cairns where he spent time working at Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisations Wuchopperen and Gurriny Yealamucka.

Dr James has a special interest in cardiovascular disease and Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and worked for one year in remote cardiology outreach clinics with NT Cardiac and Royal Darwin Hospital’s cardiology department while undertaking cardiac ultrasound training at the University of Melbourne. He is currently a PhD candidate with Charles Darwin University and Menzies School of Health Research, working in collaboration with the ultrasound education group at the University of Melbourne. His PhD looks to assist in strengthening the capacity of the Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service workforce to develop skills that are not readily available in remote communities. He has recently published in the BMJ Global Health Journal. He regularly presents his research at both national and international conferences. He is a member of NACCHO’s RHD expert working group and a trainer for Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners in the use of cardiac ultrasound as part of NACCHO’s Echo in ACCHOs Program.
