A Family Support Program for Cape York Communities
Apunipima is pleased to be delivering the Breakthrough for Families Program. A support program for families and the broader community impacted by the substance use of a family member.
The Breakthrough for Families Program is being delivered by Apunipima across 12 communities in Cape York. The program is part of the Queensland Governments Action on Ice Strategy and aims to provide information and support to family and community members impacted by the substance use of a family or community member.
The program has been tailored specifically for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. A key component of the program is support and information to help families to understand the physical and emotional effects that drugs and alcohol have on their family and/or community member along with strategies to help them stay safe and manage the challenges that they may face.
Dwayne Savo and Julie Williams will be travelling throughout the Cape York over the next 12 months conducting Community Information Sessions and Family Sessions.
“The program gives family members a holistic view of their loved one and the tough times they are going through. We also help family members understand how important it is that they put their’s and the children’s safety and health first.” said Dwayne,
Apunipima has developed a rainbow symbol to help participants to reconnect and heal their family and community. The program aims to start conversations about Family, Community, Country, Spirituality and Culture.
“We are working closely with Apunipima’s Social Emotional Wellbeing Centres, Primary Health Clinics and the broader community to promote the program and encourage participation.” said Julie.
