Nutrition Students: Sunsets and Say No to Sugary Drinks

Sunset websmlMyself (Brendan) and Mandy are students from Queensland University of Technology, studying final year Nutrition and Dietetics. Our project is a component of the Sugary Drinks Proper No Good! social marketing campaign, aimed at supporting healthy drink choices amongst children and adolescents in Cape York.

We have spent the last three weeks, researching, talking to many Apunipima staff and preparing resources for our community trip to Napranum and Mapoon. We developed an education session around sugary drinks education and arrived in Weipa last Monday, ready to deliver this session to the two communities PCYCs targeting children aged 5-11 years old.

The first session was at the PCYC in Napranum where we started out with one participant, but interest soon picked up and we had more kids coming along to the session. The following day in Mapoon, numbers increased even more than the previous day.

We trialled a range of activities over the two days in Napranum and Mapoon and included: relay and skipping games, puzzle games, artwork and guessing sugar content games.

Given it was school holidays we had all the learning hidden into each game and had a good discussion with all the kids before and after each game. We had an absolute blast delivering the sessions to the kids in both these communities and it was particularly rewarding seeing the kids’ jaws drop when they learnt how much sugar was in the 1.25L coke.

We finished the sessions on both days with fruit smoothies and came away from our community trip with a completely positive experience and witnessed two phenomenal sunsets.
