Six State Police officers are permanently stationed in Kowanyama. Volunteer State Emergency Service, Marine Rescue and Rural Fire Brigade groups are also established.
Council and Queensland Education have a joint partnership to operate an early childhood centre.
Kowanyama has a Commonwealth Bank Agency situated at the Post Office. Council operates this and an EFTPOS facility.
The Kowanyama General Store has an ATM inside the premises.
Council operates the Kowanyama Post Office. The Post Office is open from 9 to 12 noon and 1 pm to 3.30 pm Monday to Friday.
Freight is brought into Kowanyama by road weekly during the dry season only. Transport operate this service. Airfreight service is available via the regular air services.
A general store sells grocery items, meat, bread, milk and a range of fresh fruit and vegetables and is open six days a week. Many residents choose to shop direct with major chains in Cairns using the regular freight services during the dry season for delivery.
Major recreation for Kowanyama residents is hunting, fishing, four wheel driving and camping. Facilities also exist for football, swimming, cricket, tennis and basketball.
A vehicle is not generally required to move about the township, however, if you wish to enjoy the idyllic outdoor life available on Cape York Peninsula, a boat and four wheel drive are a must. The Council has vehicles for hire in Kowanyama.
