Overview

The New Mapoon Community is situated between Bamaga and Seisia. The community was relocated to its present site in 1963/64 from Mapoon (known as Old Mapoon). It is a small Aboriginal community with historical and relational ties to Old Mapoon just north of Weipa. The then National Party Government forcibly removed Old Mapoon people in the 1960's. In recent times people have returned to Old Mapoon which received Aboriginal Council Status in March 2000.

The community employs their own environmental health officers as well as a sport and recreation officer and an arts and cultural officer. New Mapoon is in the process of getting some internal roads sealed.

New Mapoon DOGIT covers 9,390 hectares and is 800 kilometers from Cairns and 2 kilometers east of Bamaga at the top of Cape York.

Health Action Team

A Health Action Team is still in development for this area. The community is represented on the Apunipima Board.
