The Chronic Disease Program run by Apunipima is funded by Queensland Health and focuses on nutrition, exercise and diet.
The team consists of a nutritionist, a nutrition health worker, a healthy lifestyle co-ordinator and two women's health workers.
The team provide a range of health promotion programs and initiatives to the communities directly, by visiting the communities and providing programs including;
- The Pitstop Program - This is health promotion and screening to encourage people to have regular health checks.
- Healthy Cooking Classes - This is to educate and encourage better nutrition by teaching people how to cook healthy and tasty food.
- Food Security - Ensuring the food supply in communities is as fresh and safe as possible.
The healthy lifestyle co-ordinator complements the nutrition team, by providing broader healthy lifestyle programs and physical activities. Programs that are setup include;
- The Coen Gym Support Program - This gym is supported by the Chronic Disease Strategy to ensure that the community-run facility continues to provide service to the community.
- Community Activity Program Setup - Assisting communities to set up health-related activities and programs, such as regular walking groups and 'Growing Strong'.
The Women's Health Workers provide a range of women's health promotion and education, specifically focusing on cervical cancer screening. They also provide health promotion complementing the maternal and child health program in areas such as Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
