Keep Active

We have all heard how exercise helps prevent and manage diabetes and other chronic diseases. Sometimes you may not be sure how to get started or you may not want to do it on your own. Here are some programs that may help get your started.

Walking Groups

Walking Groups are a great way to get active while having a yarn doing it. Ask your Health Worker about Walking Groups in your community.

The BEAT IT program is for anyone who wants to get fit and have some fun. Over a number of weeks you will get together with other people also interested in getting healthy and join in classes that are fun, safe and supportive.

The BEAT IT program is suitable for people who may be overweight and/or obese, with or at risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, osteoporosis and any other lifestyle related chronic condition.

It’s also suitable for anybody just looking to get active and improve their health in a supportive environment.

  • Is a 10-12 week physical activity and education program which includes healthy eating and lifestyle advice;
  • Helps participants manage diabetes and other chronic conditions through increased physical activity and healthy lifestyle behaviours;
  • Ensures participants are competent to exercise independently following program completion;
  • Is run in a small group environment with a strong social aspect;
  • Provides a safe and secure place to make lifestyle changes;
  • Program providers are trained by Australian Diabetes Council’s health professionals.

Keep a look out for upcoming classes in your community!
