Congratulations – you’re going to be a mum! This is an exciting, bewildering and sometimes worrying time. Apunipima’s Maternal and Child Health team will help make sure you know as much as you can about what to expect in the coming months.
The usual schedule of antenatal visits is:
You will also receive your first Baby Basket at the Health Centre or in your home by the Health Worker and Midwife/Child Health Nurse team.
Fruit and Vegetable Vouchers
You will need lots of extra healthy food as your baby continues to grow. We will give you food vouchers at each antenatal visit that you can redeem at your local store for fresh fruit and vegetables.
Over the course of your pregnancy you will receive vouchers valued at $40 each. We also have friendly Nutrition Team members who can talk to you about the best food options and even arrange a cooking class as part of our Growing Strong Program.
About six weeks before the expected birth of your baby you will head to Cairns. Once you’re in Cairns, our Family Health Team will talk you through the birth and the labour process so you know what to expect.
If you’re scared about becoming a parent we can talk to you about what might be worrying you. Pregnant mums need to visit Cairns Hospital at least once before giving birth. We’ll help you with that visit and talk to you about the people you will meet there and what they do, like the midwife, the doctor, the nurse etc.
We also give out Baby Basket 2 to make sure you have everything you need while you are in Cairns.
Congratulations – this is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming time
