Horn Island has limited facilities with the majority being based out of Thursday Island. Horn Island does however enjoy the facilities offered by the Horn Island Sports Complex and the location is ideal for anyone interested in boat/water sports.
A popular pastime is to fish off the wharf and catches of large jew, mackerel and coral trout are not unusual.
There are two licensed premises on Horn Island these are the Wongai Hotel and Gateway Resort. Wongai Hotel and Gateway Resort have standard operating hours in relation to the sale of liquor. The Wongai has a bistro with very good meals at reasonable prices. The Gateway Resort has a smorgasbord each night of the week. Food is very good and reasonably priced.
There is a museum at the Gateway Resort on Horn Island, which shows the History of World War II in the Torres Strait. They also organise a tour of the Island showing you the historical war sites.
Accommodation is also available at the Holiday Park.
Horn Island has only one grocery store but supplies can be purchased in Cairns and shipped up by barge.
Tagai State College operates a campus on Horn Island that caters for children from pre-prep to year 7 and NurapaiKazil Centre offers long day care.
Qantas offers two flights daily to Horn Island. The airport is approximately an 8 minute drive from Horn Island Village and car parking is free of charge.
Rebel Marine and McDonald Charter Boats operate bus and ferry transfers between Horn Island Airport and Thursday Island. Travel time is approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
